Norwegian Buttermilk Waffles
If you’ve never had a Norwegian waffle, it’s not the kind of waffle that’s like an American waffle—fluffy and thick. These are thinner and softer, and they’re baked in a heart-shaped waffle iron. It’s super delicious and very Scandinavian.

We love adding jam on top, or brown cheese. If you’ve ever heard of goat cheese, brown cheese is similar and so good! Or just eat it with a little bit of sugar on top. Either way, these are super delicious. And if you don’t have a heart waffle maker, you can still make it in a regular waffle iron. Just know that the texture is softer and more delicate than the usual crisp waffles.
When we have surprise visitors over, we always serve them heart-shaped waffles. It gives them a heartwarming welcome, and the smell in the kitchen is magical.

The toppings on these waffles are endless. I serve them with whipped cream or homemade strawberry jam. My weakness is serving them with brown cheese, which is Norway’s iconic cheese—it is so good!
In these waffles, I use buttermilk and whole milk. The acid in the buttermilk helps to tenderize the baked waffles from the inside out and ensures that the inside is moist, tender, and so incredibly delicious.
